Tony is National Clinical Director for Prescribing for NHS England, with responsibility for implementing the recommendations of the National Overprescribing Review. He has been a GP in Nottingham and a clinical academic at the University of Nottingham since 1992. He is also a NIHR Senior Investigator and leads the medication safety theme for the NIHR Great Manchester Patient Safety Research Collaboration. Tony has a particular interest in prescribing and patient safety and has led several projects which have documented the frequency, nature and causes of safety problems in healthcare (mainly in general practice). He has also helped to improve patient safety through implementation of various initiatives, including the PINCER prescribing safety intervention, which has been rolled out nationally in England. In his role as National Clinical Director for Prescribing, Tony has a particular interest in promoting lifestyle interventions as an alternative to medicines, where appropriate. Tony was awarded an OBE in the 2022 New Year Honours list.
