Newcastle University Lifestyle Medicine Society

We are a lifestyle medicine society for students at Newcastle University. Since our inception in October 2020, we currently have over 45 members from a range of year groups and degree courses (including medical students and non-medics) and are continuing to grow!

So far, we have held a range of talks and workshops, and earlier this year established our social running group to provide a space for students to engage in physical activity within a friendly community. We have also partnered with a local coffee shop so members are entitled to our exclusive discount card. We have worked in collaboration with many other societies at Newcastle University, and hope to continue to do so to increase awareness of lifestyle medicine among students.

Alongside inspiring students to engage in lifestyle medicine through our events, we also aim to increase awareness of lifestyle medicine in the local community in and around Newcastle. We are currently planning a workshop where our members go into local schools to teach children about lifestyle medicine through fun interactive days. Additionally, we are in direct contact with the Medical School as we aim to encourage them to embed lifestyle medicine more thoroughly within the undergraduate curriculum.

If you are a Newcastle University student, you can buy your NLMS membership from https://www.nusu.co.uk/getinvolved/societies/society/lifestylemedicine/ for only £5.

Our social media shares helpful lifestyle medicine tips for everyone and you can find us at @newcastlelifestylemedicine on Instagram, or Newcastle Lifestyle Medicine Society on Facebook.

University College London Lifestyle Medicine Society

Here at UCL, our society hopes to encourage students at University to make positive behaviour changes in pursuit of holistic health, to help us prioritise physical, social and mental wellness amidst the hustle and bustle of University life. We aim to foster a supportive environment where people feel motivated and empowered to cultivate healthy habits in their everyday lives.

Beyond promoting wellness and mindful living, our committee believes it is also critical to recognise that these activities can be considered a luxury for some, especially in the context of England’s social inequalities and health gradient. We want to take the opportunity as leaders of the society to shed light on the broader context in which varying levels of access to the social determinants of health result in health inequities amongst people from different socioeconomic backgrounds, as Lifestyle Medicine can play an invaluable role to close this health gap.

Together, we hope to inspire others to become advocates of this incredible movement, which has the power to shape the landscape of Preventative Medicine and improve public health outcomes.

Our aims:

  • Provide safe spaces for like-minded individuals to connect and look after themselves physically, mentally and socially amidst the hustle of University life.
  • Promote awareness of the importance of Lifestyle Medicine as a form of Preventative Medicine, which can prevent, better manage, or even reverse lifestyle-induced chronic diseases that are highly prevalent today.

Students in the UCL community can get involved by signing up for our self-care and social events, participate in our social media campaigns and incorporate the pillars of Lifestyle Medicine in their everyday lives. Our passionate and ambitious committee is looking forward to planning an array of events this coming academic year, which includes mindfulness journaling sessions, ecotherapy walks, puppy yoga, talks by leading Lifestyle Medicine clinicians and much more!
