Lifestyle Medicine in the Workplace – Lifestyle Medicine in Practice

Healthcare Professionals, Patients, Public
Yorkshire

I have set up a lifestyle medicine nurse led clinic in Skipton North Yorkshire. The aim is two fold: One to attract people who would not normally visit their GP, and just want health advice and support to change their health for the better, and secondly to work with businesses to deliver health checks in the workplace. Being nurse led we do refer back to the individuals GP is there are any clinical observations that require further investigation. However, our main focus is generating motivation and offering support to embark on change. We use the BSLM model of the 6 pillars and Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s lifestyle medicine course to inform our practice.

The feedback and engagement from both individuals and businesses is overwhelming positive. We see people who don’t normally see a health care professional regularly, we are working with the “healthy” but they are crying out for health advice in a world that is saturated with often conflicting, and spurious information from the internet, and social media. So, having an evidence based approach is wholeheartedly embraced.

I also work in partnership with a local wellbeing company where we run workshops on various subjects like sleep, stress, relaxation, gut health, and general wellbeing. These have been delivered to multiple businesses, from power stations, to concrete manufacturing businesses. Again the engagement is so encouragingly positive, motivating us further to carry on . There is a real thirst for ideas to make changes to health, from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

We have also set up various initiatives. The building we are based in has a physiotherapist/yoga teacher, a gym set up by an ex-royal marine and firefighter, and a local chef and healthy eating expert. We are trailing an evening dining event that is designed to offer an interesting way to present food, exercise, and relaxation.

We really are trying to go “up-stream” to affect change. It is exciting and challenging, but the motivation to carry on is being driven by the feedback we have gained to date.
