Lifestyle Medicine in Practice – Active Menopause

Physical activity can help to manage symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. Active Menopause provides resources and information to spread this message both to residents and healthcare professionals.

It includes a webpage written by a Women’s Health Registrar, Physical Activity Guidelines for Perimenopausal and Menopausal Women (our local version of the Chief Medical Officers’ Guidelines), a free downloadable guidebook, ‘Your Guide to An Active Menopause’ which discusses the main types of physical activity alongside pictorial ‘how-to’ guides, tips and useful resources.

The guide is being utilised by several GP surgeries, physical activity advocates and healthcare professionals. We are also offering free ‘My Active Menopause’ workshops, a series of 2 workshops introducing women to physical activity, the opportunity to try menopause yoga and a strength and resistance session, and, being based on the social prescribing model, the opportunity to speak to a range of partners including Age UK, Mind, local area coordinators, leisure centres and local physical activity and health teams.

We have delivered 2 sessions so far and have plans to deliver another 2 into the new year. We are also exploring collaboration with the Healthy Workplaces team to increase knowledge and support around menopause and physical activity within workplaces. The events and resources are funded by Active Together and therefore can be made free to all participants.
