The Silent Pandemic: Earth System Destabilization is Driving a Global Health Crisis

In this talk Samuel S. Myers will draw on his recent publication, “Connecting planetary boundaries and planetary health: a resilient and stable Earth system is crucial for human health,” and will explore how destabilization of Earth’s natural systems is emerging as a defining global health challenge of our time.

Samuel S. Myers is Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Founding Director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Planetary Health as well as the Planetary Health Alliance.

Dr. Myers’ research examines the human health impacts of global environmental change. His work includes quantifying the effects of:

• Rising atmospheric CO₂ concentrations on crop nutrition and human health

• Declines in pollinator populations

• Ocean warming and its impacts on global fisheries

Through his leadership at JHIPH and the Planetary Health Alliance (a global consortium of over 550 organizations across more than 80 countries) he advances research, education, and policy action to safeguard human health in the Anthropocene.
