Join us for a full-day workshop on the essentials of Lifestyle & Nutritional Psychiatry, a collaborative event featuring world-leading researchers and clinicians from the Food & Mood Centre at Deakin University, the British Society for Lifestyle Medicine, and a panel of invited experts. Following the success of last year’s event in London, BSLM & Deakin University’s Food & Mood Academy are teaming up again to bring this event to Edinburgh. This full day, collaborative, in-person event surrounding Lifestyle Psychiatry highlighting the critical role of lifestyle (particularly diet) in mental and brain health will be followed up by a practical online session to “Review, Reflect & Reset”, ensuring successful application of the learning.

Join us for a one-day, in-person collaborative masterclass exploring the latest evidence in Nutritional Psychiatry, including the impact of diet and the gut on brain function and mental health, and practical strategies for real-world implementation.

Led by world-leading researchers and clinicians, including Distinguished Professor Felice Jacka, OAM, this immersive workshop will equip healthcare professionals with:

  • The latest research in Nutritional Psychiatry
  • Insights into the gut–brain axis and its relevance to mental health
  • Evidence-based dietary and lifestyle interventions
  • Practical tools to integrate these approaches into clinical care
  • Structured goal-setting to support meaningful change in practice

Following the in-person session, six months after the event, delegates will be invited to an optional online Review, Reflect & Reset session.

The Deakin University Food and Mood Centre is focused on expanding the important research in the new field of Nutritional Psychiatry to discover risk factors and develop solutions to mental health problems using dietary and nutritional strategies.

This is the only such research centre in the world and this unique event will give a select number of attendees a one off intense and concentrated educational experience led by Professor Felice Jacka & other global experts in the rapidly evolving field of nutritional psychiatry.

Professor Jacka has been responsible for the development of the highly innovative and impactful field of ‘Nutritional Psychiatry’, establishing diet as a risk factor and treatment target for mental disorders.

The results of the studies she has led including the landmark SMILES trial) have been highly influential, being cited in more than 100 policy documents globally (e.g., WHO, UNICEF) and influencing clinical guidelines in psychiatry in Australia and elsewhere.

She is widely recognized as international leader in the field of Nutritional Psychiatry research and is an ISI Highly Cited Researcher (2020-2024 inclusive), putting her in the top 0.1% of publishing scientists worldwide for impact. In 2021 she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her services to Nutritional Psychiatry.

She has written two books for commercial publication, including the very popular children’s book “There’s a Zoo in my Poo”.

People who have had cancer, their carers and healthcare professionals looking after them have to deal with a lot of stress. Mindfulness practices can help reduce stress and improve quality of life. In this session we will look at what is mindfulness, why mindfulness, and how it works, with special reference to cancer. We will do some meditation practices and discuss practical ways of bringing mindfulness to our daily life.
