Certification involves a self-directed learning process, however, BSLM provides candidates with the assistance of our Education Coordinators and access to a section of the website with educational resources for certification.
In most cases, candidates are strongly recommended to undertake the 30 hour online Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies course offered by the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) as this will provide a solid grounding for the exam. There is a separate fee charged by ACPM for this course. There is no special discount for BSLM members unfortunately.
Candidates are also encouraged to undertake the Comprehensive Board Review Course (CBRC) offered by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. This course was developed by lead authors John Kelly, MD, MPH and Jeni Shull, MD, MPH, with active participation from an Editorial Advisory Panel comprised of many of the leading experts in the field of lifestyle medicine.
There are also other highly regarded courses that will assist with exam preparation. The following are recommended by the IBLM:
ACLM/ACPM Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies (LMCC) Institute of Lifestyle Medicine (Harvard) online courses Cornell certificate in plant-based nutrition
British Society of Lifestyle Medicine conferences and workshops (this site).

International Plant Based Nutrition Healthcare Conferences
Candidates will have access to a list of online resources, references, articles and other reading to assist with exam preparation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
IS THERE STILL ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE AND COMPLETE THE REQUIREMENTS BEFORE THE EXAM IN AUGUST?
There most certainly is. Exam preparation and board certification requirements can realistically be completed in a 2-3 month period, depending on how much time you have to study.
I’M NOT A MEDICAL DOCTOR, CAN I STILL REGISTER FOR BOARD CERTIFICATION?
There are two types of certification available, based on your education and profession. Essentially you need to be a health practitioner or public health professional with a Masters or PhD level qualification for certification by both the IBLM & BSLM.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN MORE ABOUT THE OTHER COURSES I NEED TO COMPLETE AS PART OF THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS?
You are required to complete 30 hours of online Lifestyle Medicine CPD/CME. We strongly encourage you to undertake the Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies (LMCC) program to achieve your 30 hours. There are alternative courses which have been recommended by the IBLM but the LMCC is seen as the best preparation.
WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT WILL I HAVE TO PREPARE FOR THE EXAM?
To help support your efforts, we will create an education resources area of the website which is designed to help you with your preparation and direct you toward the right literature to study. Our education coordinator is here to help answer your questions along the way. There is also a Comprehensive Board Review Course (CBRC) mentioned above, which candidates may choose to undertake. This course is provided by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and is also seen as ideal exam preparation, so it’s highly recommended.
HOW CAN I MEET THE 10 HOUR REQUIREMENT FOR IN-PERSON CME/CPD
The best way to get at least 10 hours of in-person CPD/CME is to attend Lifestyle Medicine 2018 in June in Edinburgh. (The 2017 conference also qualifies for those who attended). And for those who can’t make it to the conference in June, we will be providing options under the events page on our website.
