Let’s Walk More Launch Article
In 2015, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, which represents Britain’s leading doctors, published a landmark report titled Exercise:The Miracle Cure. This report identified physical activity, and in particular walking, is the most accessible, sustainable and effective form of exercise for the general population. Evidence shows that walking supports cardiovascular, metabolic, musculoskeletal and cognitive health, and plays a significant role in preventing and managing chronic disease. Over the past five decades, the NHS has achieved major advances in acute and specialist care, yet the modern environment has reduced daily movement and increased sedentary behaviour. This shift has contributed to the rise of preventable non-communicable diseases. The Walking Health Service (WHS) by the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM) has been developed to complement and supplement the clinical care of the NHS by making brisk walking a central element of disease prevention and treatment. We would like to recognise key organisations making walking more accessible and enjoyable across the UK, including Living Streets, Ramblers, local authority walks teams, the Active Travel England, the Great Run Company, Parkrun, and Walking Scotland. Building on their work, this campaign aims to inspire individuals and communities to make walking a part of everyday life.
