- General Practitioner
- BSLM Trustee
Punam is an experienced GP, who has worked with patients from varying social and ethnic backgrounds in both London and Glasgow. This has given her a modern understanding of the complex health and lifestyle issues facing our cross-cultural communities today. Through her years of experience as a primary care physician and an educationalist, she developed a strong passion for all aspects of lifestyle medicine. This was intensified through personal illness, allowing her to learn, first hand the power of self-prescribing lifestyle strategies. Punam has a niche interest and expertise in mindfulness and its role in enhancing wellbeing and patient healthcare.
Punam is a proud second-generation Indian, born in Scotland but nurtured by a family of Ayurvedic and homeopathic doctors. Self-proclaimed to have been raised on “turmeric and Irn Bru”, Punam has an uplifting take on Lifestyle Medicine. Punam is training to teach yoga, to allow her to combine her medical and lifestyle expertise with yoga to create a bespoke form of exercise for both mental and physical wellbeing.
Modern day medicine has gradually become more reactive rather than preventative to disease. Punam creates unique lifestyle strategies for patients and the wider public to prevent chronic disease setting in and believes this is true anticipatory care planning. This firmly echoes the definition by the WHO of health being “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
Through prescribing evidence-based lifestyle medicine to our public, there is no reason why we cannot together create and empower people to live longer, healthier and happier lives.
