Karen is a consultant in diabetes, endocrinology and general medicine in Livingston, Scotland.
She graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1994 and completed specialist training in the North-East of England and South East of Scotland before taking up her consultant post in 2007.
She has a PhD from the University of Edinburgh awarded in 2005 on autoimmune immunology and an MSc in Clinical Education (2018).
Over the years she has had many roles in leadership and medical education. These include being the Clinical Lead for the Diabetes Managed Clinical Network for NHS Lothian, the Undergraduate Lead and then Associate Director of Medical Education in NHS Lothian and has been the external examiner for the MSc in Diabetes at Queen Margaret University.
She has examined MRCP(UK) PACES examinations and has almost a decade’s involvement with MRCP(UK) Part 1. Initially this took the form of being a member of the examination board and more latterly she has been the medical secretary for the Part 1 board.
She has spent six years on the Council of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh representing Recently Appointed Consultants. During this time she introduced series of initiatives to support recently appointed consultants and set up the college’s mentoring scheme.
Through her clinical work in diabetes and endocrinology she has a strong interest in lifestyle medicine and tries to incorporate it into her consultations.
