Dr Helen Lawal
- BSLM Regional Director Yorkshire
Nigerian born and Yorkshire bred, Helen works as a GP in Leeds. As a former athlete and athletics coach Helen has always had a keen interest in sport and exercise, Intercalating in Sport and Exercise Science at Leeds University in 2006. She graduated from the UCL GP VTS in 2015 and spent the first 3 years of GP life working in Sexual Health alongside being a salaried GP, then a locum with Yorkshire Medical Chambers. Working at both Leeds Student Medical Practice and across Harrogate, Leeds and Bradford has given her a real insight into the needs of a range of demographic of patients and inspired her to fully embrace lifestyle medicine.
In compliment to this Helen has become a Health Coach, undertaking her training with The Health Coach Institute. She believes health coaches as “Masters of Habit Change” are instrumental in the lifestyle medicine approach and that the transformational coaching skills she is developing are a powerful tool in creating lasting behaviour change for her clients and patients. With this new skill set and a real passion to promote LM she has recently been appointed as Lead GP for Lifestyle Medicine and Wellness for One Medical Group and is working to roll out NHS lifestyle medicine clinics alongside a private wellness centre in Harrogate.
As a portfolio GP, Dr Helen also works as a media doctor. She co-presented the Channel 4 series How To Stay Well which aired in mid 2017 and is now co-presenter of Channel 4’s successful series, Food Unwrapped.
