Dr Fraser Birrell
Dr Birrell is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Institute of Cellular Medicine, and is part of the Musculoskeletal Research Group in Newcastle Biomedicine. Dr Birrell is part of the team looking at monitoring and measuring age-related musculoskeletal decline (WP2). He has been pioneering Group Clinics, a form of Shared Medical Appointments, for 5 years and is academic lead of the UK SMA Contact Group.
Dr Emily Symington
Dr Emily Symington is a salaried GP working in South London and a governing body member for Croydon CCG. Following a Darzi Fellowship in Clinical Leadership she continues to be involved with new ways of working in Primary Care. Emily first got involved with a pilot of group consultations as part of the Together for Health programme in Croydon. Following success of this pilot in supporting patients with diabetes she is now involved in spread of group consultations for diabetes across South West London. She is also working on a project to use group consultations as part of a multifactorial approach to managing obesity.
Dr Jonny Coates BA(Hons), MBBS(Hons), MRCGP, DCH
Jonathan is a GP in Newcastle. He has been piloting Shared Medical Appointments at his Practice since April 2016, driven by a desire to increase patient empowerment and reduce health inequalities.
Dr Alison Manson
Mrs Alison Manson UK SMAC Group member Alison’s career in healthcare started over 30 years ago in nursing, she then went on to join the pharmaceutical industry in a variety of sales, medical, government affairs and training roles. Her ambition has always been to support and drive the NHS to be a more person-centred organisation and her vision and determination to achieve this is what drives, motivates and keeps her going on her travels all over the country. Alison has a passion for people and listening to their stories. This has proven to be a great foundation for her work with the Experience Led Care Programme (ELC). She has been involved in the development of person- centred outcomes for many years and over the last 3 years developing and supporting primary care to deliver and embed Group Consultations - GC (Shared Medical Appointments – SMA). She is now working tirelessly to train, mentor and support clinicians to introduce, embed and spread Group Consultations (Shared Medical Appointments) in their routine practice.
Dr Rob Lawson BSc MBChB MRCGP FRCG

Having qualified in the 1970s, Rob has gained extensive experience as a GP in Scotland. His principal interest is primary and secondary prevention of disease and the specialty of Lifestyle Medicine. As well as leading his NHS team to the highest awards for quality (2003-2013) he also founded a charity in 1991 providing rehabilitation in venues around East Lothian for sufferers of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, lung disease and frailty.
